Introducing Adelaide Chiropractor Dr Michael Radermacher
Chiropractic has been a part of my life since 1975. It was a natural choice, really. My parents were raised in Germany, where natural health practitioners practice right alongside conventional medical practitioners, and natural medicines are peoples’ first choice at the pharmacy. I was seven-years-old when Mum first took me to visit Dr Michael P. Ward at Wollongong Chiropractic Health Centre. His clinic was a converted house on the high street. Sweet-smelling herbal tonics in brown glass bottles lined the shelves in his office. Michael was a tall man with big seventies sideburns and moustache, and the calmest demeanor I’ve ever encountered. It was a great atmosphere. You just felt so relaxed and safe in his care. And he was my inspiration to become a chiropractor.
At age 21, disenchanted with the career I had fallen into, Michael provided the encouragement and support I needed to realise my true calling, so I applied for entry into university as a mature-aged student. Thankfully I passed the exam and was accepted. That’s when the real work began! Four years of training in the basic sciences, including physics, chemistry, biology, biochemistry, anatomy and physiology, and I graduated from the University of New South Wales with a Bachelor of Science degree. Then two more years at Macquarie University, studying the art and science of chiropractic: kinesiology, neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, orthopaedics, radiography and radiology, diagnosis, adjusting techniques, and patient care. I graduated with a Master of Chiropractic degree, and I was awarded the Chiropractic Student of the Year Prize (1996). I worked as a locum doctor in Canberra and New South Wales, before settling in South Australia in 1999, where I worked as an associate in two busy practices. I established my own office, Foundation Chiropractic in Adelaide in 2002.
I’m married to Suzanne, and we have a son, Zachary, and a cat, Matilda. So how does a chiropractor stay healthy? There’s an old saying that goes, “The harder I work, the luckier I get”. The same principal applies to health. In our family, we use diet, nutritional supplements, exercise and chiropractic to stay healthy. This is the foundation of life-long health and wellness. How often do you get adjusted? My family and I each get adjusted once a week or once a fortnight. Of course, I can’t adjust myself, so I travel across town to see my chiropractor.
Every day I have the opportunity to help people in the recovery of their health. Some come for relief and leave when they get what they came for. Others see the vital role chiropractic has to play in maintaining health and vitality throughout their life, and come for regular check-ups. Others bring their whole family. I feel incredibly privileged. I love giving people the gift of health and teaching them what true health is. After all, doesn’t every family deserve to enjoy great health and quality of life?
